How I Keep My Home Tidy

Growing up, I never really cared whether our house (or even my room) was tidy. I didn’t matter whether there was dust all over – although it triggered my allergies 😢 But as I got older, I started to appreciate and enjoy going home to a tidy, relaxing home after a hard day at work.

“A relaxing peaceful evening at home is one of life’s greatest pleasures.”

Aside from having a calming environment, I don’t have to worry much about guests coming to visit at home, knowing that our home is pretty much presentable most of the time. I listed down 7 ways that I keep my home tidy. Disclaimer: I know that the tips below may not fit everyone’s lifestyle (especially if you have kids). However, if you could choose one thing to apply and that helps you, then that’s good enough 😊

1. Own less stuff

This might be one of the more practical benefits of minimalism. The less clutter you have, the less stuff to clean and worry about. One of the guidelines that I follow is that everything we own should have a “home”. I should know where to place / store items, even before I buy them.

“If you have to buy stuff to store your stuff, you might have too much stuff.” – Courtney Carver.

2. Make the bed every morning

Making the bed just takes a couple of minutes. Your bed will most probably take a lot of space in your bedroom, so having it made just makes the room look much more relaxing and put together.

3. Clean as you go

This might be one of the most helpful tips in keeping your home tidy, especially in the kitchen. While waiting for you meal to cook, start cleaning up your ingredients, chopping board, knives, etc. Wash your pots and pans right after cooking. Wash the dishes or load them into the dishwasher after eating. Empty the dishwasher straightaway.

4. Tidy up surfaces before going to bed

Take a quick look at the surfaces in your home before you go to bed and clear the kitchen countertops, tables, and other surfaces. Put back misplaced items to where they should be stored, and you’ll wake up to a tidy home the following morning 😊

5. Squeegee the shower glass after taking a shower

Some might think this is overkill. But actually, it just takes a minute or less to do this, and you’ll have a cleaner-looking shower.

6. Vacuum the floor and wipe surfaces regularly

Since both the Mister and I have full-time jobs, we only get to do this on the weekend. I put on some music while we’re cleaning to make it more enjoyable. And when we’re done, I usually diffuse some essential oils, sit on the couch, and just take a minute to enjoy my clean home.

7. Keep the family involved

Regular cleaning can be tiresome, so ask your family members for help. In our home, the Mister is in charge of cleaning the hard-to-clean-but-you-just-clean-them-once-in-a-while stuff (e.g. scrubbing the shower), watering the plants, taking out the trash, and vacuuming half of the house. I vacuum the other half, run and empty the dishwasher, and wipe down all surfaces and sinks. I also load the laundry, then we hang our clothes together when it’s done.

I hope you found some of the tips helpful. Good luck! 👍
